Kenneth Christie and Marion Reicker provided a considerable
amount of information contained herein from their book “The MacDonalds of the
Washademoak Lake” printed by Capital Free Press Ltd of Fredericton, NB
copyright Marion Gilchrist Reicker 1988 in which she acknowledged the
genealogical information provided by Mrs Claire Pugsley of McDonalds Point,
Queens County; the late Mr Kenneth Christie, and Dr WC MacDonald of Malden, MA
as made available by his grandson, Andrew MacDonald of Nasonworth, MA. “The
MacDonalds of Washademoak Lake” contained much information about the Donald MacDonad
and Ann Smith of Moncton Parish, Westmorland County and latterly New Canaan,
Brunswick Parish, Queens County and in particularly of three of their twelve
children, namely John MacDonald who married Sarah Mott, Alexander Black
MacDonald who married Janet Hendry and Lewis MacDonald who married first
Elspeth Hendry and secondly Martha Titus.
Bing Geldart of Salisbury, Westmorland County, NB, provided
the information leading to the discovery of Donald MacDonald’s 1788 petition to
Lt Gov Thomas Carleton for land in Moncton Parish, Westmorland County, in the
archives at the NB Museum on Douglas Avenue in Saint John and his subsequent
crown grant for 520 acres in Moncton Parish in 1800. Surely the profit from the
sale of this land in 1808 or thereabouts provided Donald MacDonald and Ann
Smith with the wherewithal to purchase the grist mill and farm of Henry
Kitchens in New Canaan and perhaps the seed money for the settlement of several
of his children on farms on Washademoak Lake. Bing Geldart is a family historian
and a descendant of Martha Smith and John Geldart - said Martha Smith being a
sister of Ann Smith, the wife of Donald MacDonald.
Your humble scribe, much like yourself, was educated at a
university whose professors insisted that he provide a footnote for each of his
sources and that he weigh thoroughly the surrounding or collateral evidence
that gives the ring of truth to any writings. Your humble scribe certainly did
the latter but is congenitally unable to undertake the former because it slows down
the accumulation, allocation of data and compiling of the family tree which is
the fun part. Sources will be remitted on request right cheerfully. Please
research the above databases first and you may render your requirement for a
request righteously redundant.

Donald McDonald b 3 Oct 1762 at Carinish, North Uist by Isle of Skye, Scotland,
s/o Alexander and Isabel MacDonald, d Jul 15 1842 at Washademoak Lake, NB aged
78 Years, buried with wife at MacDonald's Corner Baptist Cemetery of First
Cambridge Baptist Church, Queens County, NB, Carpenter, Farmer and Miller, [Note 1: Born: Isle of Skye, Scotland.
We have no authentic record of his family in Scotland but tradition indicated
that his father and four uncles fought at the Battle of Culloden on the side of
the Pretender, Charles Edward Stewart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), and that after
the defeat several of the uncles fled to France and that Napoleon's Marshal
McDonald had a connection to the family. (Nearly one hundred years ago all
records of births, deaths, etc., in Scotland were collected and suitably cared
for in Edinburgh.) In his youth Donald came to Canada, landing in Halifax.
There a shipmate stole Donald's sea chest (containing his carpentry tools)
leaving him destitute. In a ship Donald worked his way to Saint John, NB, where
he enlisted in the army – (two regiments of British regulars were stationed
there and in Fredericton at that time and the NB Regiment had been raised as a
militia outfit on active service.) MacDonald was an athletic man over six feet
tall. Beside him in the ranks at drill stood a rather small Irishman who had
difficulty in understanding the drill sergeant's orders and made so many
mistakes that the officer struck him. This irked MacDonald and later when the
sergeant struck the Irishman across the face with the flat of his sword
MacDonald knocked the non commissioned officer down with the stock of his
musket, seized the Irishman by the arm and fled with him into nearby woods
which lay between Saint John and the Kennebecasis River. For several days the
fugitives hid here and there in the forest and often barely escaped the
searching squads sent out to apprehend them. At last spent and famished the
Irishman could hold out no longer so it was decided best for him to return to
the camp since no greater charge than desertion stood against him. But
MacDonald's crime was punishable by death and he must try in some way to
escape. He wandered on and at last came to a clearing where some farm buildings
were seen. After watching the place for some time he concluded that there were
only two women on the premises and he decided to throw himself on their mercy.
They proved to be the daughters of the farmer who was away to the city on
business. The girls agreed to befriend him. They gave him a change of clothes,
hid his uniform, fed him well and found him a good hiding place. Later soldiers
arrived and searched the place unsuccessfully. The girls knew of a certain
farmer by the name of Smith who would soon pass their farm on his way from
Saint John to his home near Moncton. The farmer Smith gladly offered Donald
employment on his farm (at Pollett River at its intersection with the
Petitcodiac west of Moncton.) So Donald became a farmer and in due time fell in
love with one of his employer's daughters. But before they could marry the
question of Donald's desertion from the army must be settled. To that end Smith
went to Fredericton where he succeeded in obtaining a pardon for his
prospective son-in-law. Donald was required to buy a substitute to take his
place in the army. Then Donald married Ann Smith, and in time settled on a farm
in Canaan, New Brunswick, where the couple reared a family of twelve children.
He built a grist mill on a small stream which emptied into the Canaan River. I
have here in Malden a large hand-forged iron collar which came from the ruins
of the old mill a few years ago. It was the band fitted around the end of the
water wheel shaft. The Canaan River empties into the headwaters of the
Washademoak Lake and this lake flows into the St John River. Settlers along
these water courses traveled to Saint John or Fredericton in boats during the
summer and over the ice in sleds in winter. No doubt the MacDonalds made many
such trips each year and had their favourite overnight stopping places. One
such place was the Hendry farm in Cambridge. It was at that time a part of the
parish of Wickham. At the Hendry home Donald's son, Alexander Black MacDonald
met Janet Hendry whom he married. Janet's father was a prosperous farmer and
owned a large tract of land at the confluence of the Washademoak Lake and St
John River. He had a large family and as each of them married they received a
farm or its equivalent at that time, $100.00 in cash. Janet's dowry was a farm
on the shore of the Washademoak Lake about two miles from the St John River.
There Alexander and Janet came to live and reared a family of seven children.
Four of Donald's sons settled on farms along the shore of the Washademoak and
of course Donald visited them often. One summer during a visiting tour he took
sick and died at the home of his son Lewis at MacDonald's Corner, Cambridge. He
was buried at MacDonald's Corner. His wife survived him eleven years. Her
remains were buried in Cemetery at New Canaan, Queens County. --- Dr WC MacDonald, February, 1945] [Note 2

Alexander McDonald (Both of Wickham Parish) by John Colwell, Justice of the
Quorum for Queens County, in presence of Daniel Black and John Holm. Donald
MacDonald 1764 -1842. Born Isle of Skye, Scotland. As a youth landed in Halifax, NS. A shipmate stole his sea
chest leaving him destitute. He worked his way to St. John, NB and enlisted in
a British Regiment. Beside him in ranks stood a short, small Irishman who had
difficulty understanding their officer's orders. When the Irishman made a number
of mistakes the officer struck him across the face with the flat of his sword.
Donald MacDonald - 6" tall - knocked the officer down, seized the little
Irishman's arm and fled into the near-by woods between St. John and the
Kennebecasis River. Although they evaded search parties the Irishman returned
to camp and a charge of desertion. But MacDonald's offense was punishable by
death, so he fled on. Two girls on a farm befriended him, hid his uniform, fed
him, and hid him when a searching party arrived. A farmer named Smith employed
him at Pollet River. When he wanted to marry Ann Smith, the farmer's daughter,
her father went to Fredericton and got him a pardon on provision he buy a
substitute to serve in the army in his place. Donald and Ann farmed at Canaan,
had a grist mill, and reared 12 children. In 1842 he was visiting his son
Lewis, at MacDonald's Corner, he died and was buried there, and 11 years later
his wife was buried at New Canaan. Alexander Black McDonald 4 Oct 1794 - 29 Mar

1791 at NB, Ann Smith b 1772 at
Pollet River, NB, d 28 Aug 1853 at Queens County, NB, interred at Macdonald Corners
Baptist Cemetery, Queens County, NB, aged 81 years. Donald and Ann first lived
for a number of years in Moncton Parish Westmorland County on a 520 acre grant
just west of Moncton on the Petitcodiac across the river from the Smith family
who lived on the side of the river in Hillsborough Parish of Albert County, and
then before 1820 moved to New Canaan, Brunswick Parish Queens County, NB, where
they had a farm and a gristmill. Ann Smith was the daughter of James and Martha
Smith who arrived in Moncton from Philadelphia on board the brig “Lovey” on 3
June 1766 having purchased land from a Philadelphia land syndicate that
included Benjamin Franklin. It is believed that the Smith came out to Halifax
with Cornwallis in 1749 as a husbandman caring for the animals, and worked out
their obligation to the army or was released in the budget cutbacks following
the French capitulation in Quebec in 1759 and then hitched a ride on a military
supply ship to Philadelphia from whence they arranged for land and went to
Moncton. Donald and Ann had children:

Christian Visitor: At Cambridge, Queens County, July 31st, Lewis MacDonald,
Esq, aged 68 years, deeply regretted by all who knew him. He has left a
disconsolate widow, sons and daughters, with a large circle of relatives and
friends to mourn their bereavement. Brother MacDonald was a member of the First
Baptist Church in Cambridge, and throughout his sickness he manifested
remarkable submission to the divine will, and in faith committed his family
into the hands of God who has said, “leave thy
fatherless children, I will preserve them alive and let thy widows trust in
me.” His funeral was largely attended, and improved from words chosen by him in
Job19: 25-27 - 25 For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand
at the latter day upon the earth: 26 And though after my skin worms destroy
this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27 Whom I shall see for myself, and
mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within
me.] He married 1st 19 Feb 1824 at Queens County, NB, Elspeth Hendry
